Hobonichi Techo 2024 Japanese Day-Free Book A5 Size

The Day-Free Cousin Size is an A5 size monthly techo that is split into two main parts: monthly calendars and a graph-paper notebook. The book fits nicely into covers designed for the standard Hobonichi Techo Cousin.

Because the book is half the size of the full-year Cousin, it’s also light and portable.



The monthly calendar is the same calendar you’ll find in the standard Cousin book, designed with graph paper to make it easy to use. The 2024 edition will contain entries for December 2023 through March 2025.



The blank graph paper notebook contains a total of 171 pages and is comprised of 3.7 mm squares. Each page is numbered.

You can fill in as much as you want at a time without feeling constricted to dates. Keep a journal, draw a picture or graph, paste in ticket stubs, scribble on the pages, and fill the pages with capricious whims or meticulous plans — it’s all up to you.



The Day-Free blank notebook section includes the Hobonichi Techo’s characteristic daily quotes in Japanese.



The book has the same thread-stitch binding as a dictionary, allowing it to lay flat open for comfortable writing. It stays flat even if you don’t hold it down.

The book uses thin and light yet durable Tomoe River S paper. The paper has supported the Hobonichi Techo for over 20 years with its special characteristics, but it’ll be undergoing an overhaul starting with the 2024 edition techos. The paper is more resistant to bleed through, lighter despite being the same thickness, and has a smoother surface by adjusting the fibers of the paper.



Other than the monthly calendars and the notebook section, the book contains several sections that are great for schedule management, such as a yearly calendar and a yearly index page. The back of the book has bonus pages, including An Interview with Myself, Seasonal Sweets to Make at Home, and Caring for Your Eyes.

Leather Taut (Bordeaux)

This leather design is specially designed to fit snugly around your Hobonichi Techo book while keeping it slim and comfortably portable. It does not contain butterfly stopper pen holders, and pockets are kept to a bare minimum.

The 2024 edition of Taut is made of leather named “Stone,” tanned by “Nuova Albora,” a tannery in Pisa, Italy. It is a high-quality cover with a deep color resembling an aromatic Bordeaux wine.

“Stone” is made from fine raw hides from France and Germany and tanned with 100% vegetable tannin, resulting in a hard finish. The leather is colored in two stages; a light Bordeaux color is evenly applied to the leather with a metal roller machine, and after fixing the color, black paint is sprayed over the top and further polished. The polishing removes a portion of the last layer of black paint and adds an antique atmosphere of shading, unevenness, and brilliance to the surface. The longer it is used, the more the color will blend with the base Bordeaux color with depth and beauty.



Slim cuts into the leather interior allow it to hold cards the size of a credit card or business card. The pen hook on the right side is designed to hold a pen by its clip.



The cover contains a small, simply designed bookmark made of the same leather as the cover. The bookmark is debossed with the Hobonichi logo.



Each cover has its own unique take on the texture and character.

This A5-size book has pages dated across a 5-year span. The textured cover is a calming shade of brown with the years foil-pressed in gold, and the book contains a dark brown bookmark for a complete look that works well without adding an additional cover.

Each page contains the same, easy-to-use 3.7 mm graph paper as the A5 Hobonichi Techo Cousin, making it perfect for writing or drawing. The paper is a subtle cream color that’s easy on the eyes, and the printing is charcoal gray to allow handwriting to stand out from the page.

On each spread, the left page has the date and day of the week for all 5 years, with days of the week written in Japanese.

Because it’s the “Large” Hobonichi 5-Year Techo, you’ll be able to write about your everyday life to your heart’s content. There’s plenty of space to record your five years as freely as you like — you can write using a thick pen or add drawings. (Holidays are not listed in the book.)



This larger version works great as a shared diary among family members or a team notebook shared among several people at work.

The right page is a blank page for anything you’d like — continuing entries you couldn’t fit on the left, jotting notes you’d like to leave for the future, pasting items, and more. The Japanese daily quotes on the bottom of the page are excerpts from Hobo Nikkan Itoi Shinbun articles from the past years. We renewed the daily quotes from the 2023 edition, five years after its first release.

This is the decorated version of the Cover on Cover, an optional, extra covering that fits select Hobonichi Techo covers (for A5 size) to protect them from wear and tear while instantly giving solid-color covers a fresh new look. (Not for use directly on book.)

The design for “Familiar Sights” was created by designer and illustrator Kanako Kagaya.

The theme for this design is “wrapping paper for your techo.” Drawn on the cover are many motifs that we often see in our day-to-day activities, from delicious food such as puddings and fried eggs to cute little things like dogs and cats, gloves, keys, steel towers, and traffic lights.

Take a close look, and you might find something you do not usually see daily.

The diagonal lines are printed in silver ink to give a cute yet elegant impression. It shines subtly with the angle change, which would make you happy every time you pick up your techo.

In order to preserve the design of this illustrated Cover on Cover, there is no opening located in the back to access the back pocket of the cover.

This cover design is based on Shigesato Itoi’s 1989 Famicom game MOTHER (EarthBound Beginnings in North America). The design matches the groundbreakingly simple original cover of the game, with a large golden logo over a red background. The design stood out compared to standard game boxes of its day, and its appeal has only grown over the years.



The back of the cover is bright red with a simple, pared down design. It’s pressed with the logos of the Hobonichi Mother Project and Hobonichi.
