We created a pouch to store the Hobonichi Techo HON. The L-shape zipper opens the pouch extra wide for easy access but doesn’t have a gusset and is flat so it looks extremely simple and smart. We aimed for a casual beauty that is effortlessly cool. This pouch is nice and light and is made with the same material as the Tragen cover, which uses a soft nylon with an elegant sheen.
It snugly fits the A5 size HON, but it isn’t too tight so you don’t have to worry about the edge of the HON and the zipper clashing.
There’s a pocket on the interior where you can store small bits of stationery like memo pads or sticky notes.

The ruled lines used are the same that are used in the Hobonichi Note. The ruled line design was developed by Prof. Haruo Hibino and his team of researchers at BB STONE Design Psychology Unit, Inc., a venture company of Chiba University’s Faculty of Engineering.
We’d love to help kids get out of their study slumps, and help adults concentrate with a notebook that’s comfortable for their eyes. That’s the wish that brought about this ruled line design that focuses on reducing eye strain and based on design psychology.
The ruled paper is unique in that the horizontal lines crossing the page are interrupted by short vertical lines that form a subtle grid. However, they perceptually look like straight lines, because of an optical illusion caused by the way our brains work.
The design is soft with lines that aren’t too overbearing, so the notebook doesn’t feel menacing when you open it and doesn’t tire your eyes over a long writing session. It also allows you to smoothly write out words and charts. The result was a design, patented in 2020, that’s never been tried before.
The height of the lines are narrowed down slightly from the Hobonichi Note to match the size of this notebook.
This notebook is easy to use when you want to focus on your studies or thoughts.
It comes in two sizes: A6 to match the Original, and A5 to match the Cousin. The A6 size notebook is 8mm thick and contains 240 pages, while the A5 size is 10mm thick and contains 288 pages. What is Tomoe River paper?
The Hobonichi Techo's Tomoe River paper is designed to prevent bleed-through, but some fountain pens and water-based ink pens are not compatible with this paper. When switching to a new pen, we recommend testing the pen somewhere in the book, such as the back memo pages, to see if the ink bleeds through or takes an especially long time to dry.

Type: Pencil Board

These pencil boards are specially fitted for the A5 Cousin size. Keeping it underneath the page you’re writing on allows the reinforcement to provide an enjoyable writing experience. You can also choose the A5 size pencil board that fits your HON, Day-Free book, Planner, or 5-Year Techo.
Since the Hobonichi Techo that has many pages uses thin and light Tomoe River paper, you may be concerned about leaving indentations on the opposite pages when writing with a lot of pressure.
The Hobonichi Pencil Board is ideal for those users; it prevents ballpoint pens from slipping, making writing more effortless, and it is used by many people every year. We also recommend it for users who have filled their inner cover pockets with thick items.
The board has a graph pattern ruled into 5-millimeter squares, with one side further labeled by millimeter to act as a metric ruler, and a “Today” tab on the corner to mark the current page if you’d like to use it as a bookmark as well.
The new color for the 2025 lineup is the refreshing Ice Gray x Yellow. This color scheme is a mix between cool and cute, and pairs well with any cover design.
Also available is Navy x Pink with a chic color combination. The pink adds cuteness to the calming navy.

This is the decorated version of the Cover on Cover, an optional, extra covering that fits select Hobonichi Techo covers (for A5 size) to protect them from wear and tear while instantly giving solid color covers a fresh new look. (Not for use directly on book.)
The illustration for “Dog Ears Fluttering in the Wind” was selected from the works of Keiko Shibata, a picture book artist and illustrator.
This piece is from a series of artworks drawn in 2022 with the theme of “wind.” A strong wind blows from the front, causing the dog’s ears to flap. You can enjoy the unique expression of the wind, making the dog’s eyes rounded and blowing the dog’s fur.
Although the design could look like a dot pattern from a distance, it actually features seven different dogs in a diagonal pattern.
The colorful design is expressed in a warm touch with oil pastels. The various colors used make it go well with techo covers in any color.
In order to preserve the design of this illustrated Cover on Cover, there is no opening located in the back to access the back pocket of the cover.

Beautiful Season was designed by iyo okumi, an embroidery artist and illustrator. The embroidery work under the same title is printed in white ink.
Snow falling on the trees, a warm sweater, and winged people dancing by the fire. The striking white color combined with the delicacy of the embroidery makes the work look like snow crystals. The quiet beauty of this work will enchant you, making you delighted every time you put your eyes on it.

Type: Hobonichi Notebook

We introduced the Hobonichi Graph Notebook in 2019 in response to requests for a standard notebook that feels just like the Hobonichi Techo. The cover features a photograph of Denali, North America’s highest peak, as taken by Naoki Ishikawa.
This photo, capturing the full extent of Mount Denali at 6190 meters above sea level, was taken from inside a Cessna heading towards base camp for the summit. The view of the mountain composed of deep blue and white looks like a watercolor painting at a glance. This photograph is processed with cyanotype, which is a photographic process that involves a chemical solution and exposure to UV light. The appeal in this design comes from the brush marks that let you see where the solution was applied.
The notebook has thin and durable Tomoe River paper and opens completely flat. It comes in two sizes: A6 to match the Original, and A5 to match the Cousin. The A6 size notebook is 8mm thick and contains 240 pages, while the A5 size is 10mm thick and contains 288 pages. This gives you plenty of space to fill the notebooks to your heart’s content.
The 3.7 millimeter graph paper is the same as that of the Hobonichi Techo Original. The color of the ink on the page changes (red / blue / green / purple) every 60 pages in the A6 size, and every 72 pages in the A5 size. This makes it easy to split the book into several themes or use the colors as a way to more easily find old entries.
Because the book sizes match the A6 Original and A5 Cousin Hobonichi Techos, you can use these notebooks with a techo cover. The cover is great for storing items like pens or sticky notes and provides a very convenient user experience.
The notebook is a great supplement to the Hobonichi Techo, or simply a smaller-size notebook to keep by your side for filling with lots of writings or drawings.

Bijutsukai and Shin Bijutsukai are collections of craft designs published in the Meiji era (1868–1912), both books containing beautiful designs by various designers and Japanese painters. We selected three craft designs from these collections published by Unsodo, a Kyoto-based art publishing company and the only publisher of hand-printed woodblock books in Japan, to create pencil boards.
The A5 size has a craft design that describes birds playing by the water’s edge. The design depicts nature, yet the water flow is somewhat patterned, and the birds walking together amidst it are adorable.
All sizes have one striking color chosen for the back, creating a modern impression.

The Day-Free A5 Size is a monthly techo that is split into two main parts: monthly calendars and a graph-paper notebook. The book fits nicely into covers designed for the standard Hobonichi Techo Cousin book.
Because the book is half the size of the full-year Cousin, it’s also light and portable.
The monthly calendar is the same calendar you’ll find in the standard Cousin book, designed with graph paper to make it easy to use. The 2025 edition will contain entries for December 2024 through March 2026.
The blank graph paper notebook contains a total of 171 pages and is comprised of 3.7 mm squares. Each page is numbered.
You can fill in as much as you want at a time without feeling constricted to dates. Keep a journal, draw a picture or graph, paste in ticket stubs, scribble on the pages, and fill the pages with capricious whims or meticulous plans — it’s all up to you.
The Day-Free blank notebook section includes the Hobonichi Techo’s characteristic daily quotes in Japanese.
The book has the same thread-stitch binding as a dictionary, allowing it to lay flat open for comfortable writing. It stays flat even if you don’t hold it down.
The book uses thin and light yet durable Tomoe River paper. This paper that underwent an overhaul with the 2024 edition techo is more resistant to bleed through, lighter despite being the same thickness, and has a smoother surface by adjusting the fibers of the paper.
Other than the monthly calendars and the notebook section, the book contains several sections that are great for schedule management, such as a yearly calendar and a yearly index page. The back of the book has bonus pages, including Sample Symbols and Icons, How to Have Fun Keeping a Diary, and Recommended Noodle List of 47 Prefectures.
We also have the Hobonichi Pencil Board fitted for the A5 Cousin size. Not only does it keep pens from slipping and makes writing more manageable, but it also serves as a bookmark for the page that you are writing. It’s a standard item that would excellently match your techo.

This is the English version of the A5 size Hobonichi Techo Cousin with a page-per-day format.
The book layout is the same as the Japanese edition. Not only is it useful for writing down your plans for the day, jotting down memos, doodling, pasting event tickets or photos, the spacious Cousin is easy to use as a techo to write down everything work-related, as a family notebook, tracking the growth of children and pasting in pictures to create a family album or sharing pages among family members. It’s also frequently used as a planner that is always kept on a desktop or table rather than carrying around.
After years of testing, the graph paper has been set to 3.7 mm for optimal writing comfort. The graph paper design allows users to write from any starting point on the page, and the lines have been printed in light colors so users can either customize it to their own layout or ignore it completely. Like with the Japanese version, each month is printed in a different color.
The Cousin also has an exclusive section: the popular weekly pages track a week in each two-page spread for easy planning and contain a handy time schedule.
The daily pages include a quote in English per two-page spread specially chosen from its parent site, the Japanese web magazine Hobo Nikkan Itoi Shinbun.

In anticipation of the English edition being used in various countries around the world, the calendars do not list holidays.

We first introduced the Avec in response to customers who struggled with bulging books after collecting a year’s worth of pasted material in the daily pages. The Avec splits the year into books of six months each. Book 1 (January–June) is a bright lime yellow and Book 2 (July–December) is a cool ice blue.
Because it’s split into two books, it’s lightweight which makes it easy to carry around, and it also won’t get bulky even if you paste many things into your techo.
The Avec version splits the Japanese A5 Hobonichi Techo Cousin, design and all, into a 2-book set at six months each with only slight variances in calendar spans and the number of extra pages in the back. This allows you to fill the pages to your heart’s content with scheduling, diaries, little notes, tickets, photographs, doodles, and anything that strikes your fancy.
